Proposal

My proposal is to write about changing of the marijuana laws currently in effect. My audience is going to be adults over 30 because they seem to be the most hostile audience towards this controversial topic. The recent vote down of proposition 19 in California that called to regulate and tax marijuana reinforced the idea that while many people think it is logical there is still a strong opposition mostly from older adults as was indicated by the vote. Leglaizing and regulating marijuana would bring a black market drug with medical benefits and recreational appeal to the public with the possibility of bringing in staggering amounts of tax revenue.

  1. Josh,

A short proposal, but still a good topic selection. There's not a lot here for me to comment on, but I will say that it's going to be important for you to focus on your audience. it's easy for young people making this argument to forget who they're trying to convince. The economic impact for example...that's exactly the kind of argument you need. What are people over thirty worried about? Paying the bills in bad economic times, whether or not they'll be able to retire at a reasonable age, etc. How will legalizing marijuana allow us to reallocate law enforcement? Will the streets be safer since we can chase 'real criminals?'

Figure out what your audience might say in opposition, and address this. What about driving while high? Or a generation of 'dumber' citizens? Moral questions?

    Best,
    Andy
